Samotlorneftegaz Releases 1.3 Million Fry of High Value Species into Siberian Rivers

13 July 2022

Samotlorneftegaz, an enterprise of Rosneft Oil Company, is implementing a unique project for the artificial reproduction of high value fish species for northern rivers. The enterprise has released about 1.3 million Siberian sturgeon and muksun fry into Siberian water bodies.

Preserving the environment for future generations is one of the key areas of Rosneft’s development strategy. The Company aims to achieve leadership positions in minimising the environmental impact and ensuring the eco-friendliness of its production and implements several comprehensive programmes for the preservation and restoration of natural resources.

Samotlorneftegaz has been actively supporting the regional Conservation of Siberian Sturgeon programme as part of the national Ecology project since 2020. Over three years, the enterprise’s employees have released about 1.5 million of this red-listed fish fry into Ugra’s reservoirs.

The Siberian sturgeon fry of the Ob population were raised at a specialised fish hatchery in the Tyumen region on Rosneft’s order. The optimal period, following the spawning of sturgeons in the natural environment, has been chosen for the release of the fish. The site for the stocking was determined according to hydrological conditions and forage base upon the conclusion of the Nizhneobskoye Territorial Administration of the Federal Agency for Fishery.

In early July, the enterprise released about half a million of another high value species of Siberian fish, muksun, into the waters of the Ob-Irtysh basin. The salmon fry are raised at Ugra’s largest fishing grounds, located in the taiga Aitor Lake. The whitefish were released from a natural pond into the Yendyrskaya Stream, which leads to the Ob River.

Note for Editors:

Samotlorneftegaz is one of Rosneft’s largest production enterprises operating in the Khanty-Mansi Autonomous District — Yugra. The scope of its license areas exceeds 3,000 square kilometres.

In 2021, the enterprise released about 2 million muksun and Siberian sturgeon fry into the Ob-Irtysh and Yenisei basins. Overall, the campaigns have added more than 11 million fry of high value species to the waters of northern rivers over the past five years.
