Orenburgneft Started to Control the Greenhouse Gases Level Using an Unmanned Complex

01 July 2021

Orenburgneft, a production enterprise of Rosneft Oil Company, has begun using unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) to monitor greenhouse gas levels at its oil and gas treatment facilities.

Monitoring is carried out using a remote laser gas analyser installed on drones. In real-time, the control ground station receives information about the possible content of methane in the air layers. After the UAV landing and the data post-processing, a photo plan and a heat map are drawn up in case of deviations.

Monitoring will be carried out at the enterprise production facilities. The use of drones will allow monitoring of remote and hard-to-reach areas.

Specialists from Orenburgneft have extensive experience in drone monitoring of oil and gas production facilities. Over the past three years, UAVs have spent more than 10,000 hours in the air, made more than 4,200 sorties and surveyed about 500,000 km of pipelines and oil and gas production facilities.

Preservation of the environment is an integral part of the corporate culture and business operations of Rosneft. The Company aims to achieve leadership positions in minimizing the environmental impact and ensuring the eco-friendliness of its production. As part of support to achieve strategic goals addressing climate change, Rosneft is implementing a complex program to reduce greenhouse gas emissions. The expansion of this programme, as well as the introduction of innovations, such as drones, laser and thermal imaging scanners, and ultrasonic detectors, have been contributing to minimising environmental impacts.
